The Kitimat Open Soccer Tournament spelled out victory for the Kitamaat Haisla Lightning on their home turf.
On July 7 and 8, six women’s teams and eight men’s teams met on the field to compete against opponents from Terrace Providers, Prince Rupert FC, Kitwanga Cougars, Gitsegukla Predators, Kitamaat Haisla 2 and Haisla Lightning. Each team played at least three games over the course of the weekend.
Kitamaat Haisla Lightning won against the Terrace Providers when Megan Couto and Desiree Earl scored the winning goals, bringing the score to 2-0.

The win was a result of the team’s and coach Woods’ effort.
“Our women’s team has been practicing up to three times a week in the Kitamaat Village with support from many members from the community,” Desiree Earl said after the tournament, before thanking her coach. “Hoss Woods is the coach who puts all of his time and energy into the team.”
Ellis Ross and Zac Munroe have also led the Lightning in soccer and fitness drills, Earl added.
