The Spirit of the Kitlope cultural group from Kitamaat Village performed at Kildala Elementary School as part of Aboriginal Day celebrations in the district.
Spirit of Kitlope was established in the 90’s and has a member ranging between 10 and 30 members annually. The group practices every Monday at the Haisla recreation centre and has travelled as far as Vancouver and Haida Gwaii.
Organizer Shelley Bolton said nobody is turned away from joining the group, which is also open to non-Haisla residents in the district. “This little piece of our culture is so important.
At one time it was almost lost, now it’s up to us to continue for our children,” said Bolton.
