Planned power outage in Kitimat will impact some downtown businesses

Some businesses will be impacted through all of Sunday due to a planned power outage.

BC Hydro will be cutting the power to City Centre Mall and some nearby businesses for a planned system outage on the weekend.

For the retailers and customers in City Centre Mall itself it likely won't mean much disruption as the power utility has plans to have power off at 1 a.m. Sunday, November 15, and restored by 7 a.m. that day.

However other outages affecting Shoppers Drug Mart, A&W, and Tim Hortons, as well as the future No Frills store, will remain until 10 a.m. Monday morning.

BC Hydro Communications Manager Bob Gammer said the outages is being done to upgrade the power line that services that area to accommodate possible future growth.

"We are upgrading the service connection...that feeds in to all of those businesses at the mall site," said Gammer.

The manager at Shoppers Drug Mart says the company's head office is supplying a power generator to keep their store running through the outage and the plan is to be open for regular hours on the weekend.

The A&W restaurant, however, will be closed Sunday and will have a late opening on Monday, a person at the local restaurant said.

We have not yet heard what impacts the power outage will have on Tim Hortons but we'll update the story once we hear.
