Kitimat mall merchants say strike has affected business

Customers appear to be staying distant from mall over confusion regarding the picketers at entrances.

Merchants at City Centre Mall are issuing a call for shoppers who may be feeling uncomfortable entering due to striking District employees. Striking workers are at the mall entrances but that is due to the municipal offices located on the mall’s third floor.

The mall as a whole, and the business owners within, are encouraging shoppers to come back and say spending money inside doesn’t mean ‘crossing’ a picket line.

“People need to know that we are open for business,” said mall manager Laurie Middleton. “They’re [picketers] not telling people they can’t cross or anything but it’s just the impression people are getting as they get up to the mall.”
