Katharina Wehrhahn

February 1, 1929 - September 13, 2016

It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our mother and Omi, Katharina Wehrhahn. Kathe was born in Stolberg, Germany; for safety her family was relocated to Bucholz during the war. It was there that she met the love of her life Kurt at the age of 16. After a lengthy courtship they wed in June of 1955. Kurt immigrated to Canada a few weeks after the wedding to start a career with Alcan and three months later Kathe joined her husband in the new town of Kitimat.

Kathe worked at the smelter for a period of time but then left her job to start a family. Karin was born in 1960 and Dorit followed in 1964. Kathe had been a hairdresser in Germany and continued to offer her services from her home. The children often sported haircuts of dubious style which would be cutting edge these days. In the 70’s Kathe started working in the laundry facility at the old Kitimat General Hospital.

Both daughters married and Kirk, Tom and Joe entered Kathe’s life along with 6 grandchildren: Matthew, Jessica, Amanda, Shane, Samantha and Meagen. Sundays were most often spent with family enjoying appetizer afternoons or winter/summer picnics in our beautiful valley.

Retiring from work Kathe and Kurt both enjoyed boating down the channel, fishing, crabbing and sightseeing. Camping around our province in their travel trailer was also a favourite activity. Kathe enjoyed reading and knitting and earlier interests included tennis, sewing and attending the German/Canadian Club activities held regularly in town.

After Kurt passed Kathe continued to spend her hours with family and will always be remembered for her ready smile and easy going nature.
