December 14, 2020
With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of husband, father and grandpa, Joe Mazure of Chilliwack. Joe passed away on December 14, 2020. Born in Grandview, Manitoba (the son of Annie and John Mazure), Joe moved to Winnipeg for his first job as a theatre projectionist, and then as an instrument mechanic for Shell Oil Refinery. In May of 1960, he married his sweetheart Eveline at St. Edward's Church, then later moved to Kitimat, BC in 1966 to start his 31-year career at the Alcan (Rio Tinto) Aluminum Smelter. At Alcan, he began as an instrument mechanic, and retired as a project/process development technician. He was an integral part of the Alcan team responsible for establishing one of the largest independent phone systems in BC at that time. Joe enjoyed the outdoors, fishing early mornings before his work day began, travelling and camping with his family across Canada, taking up photography and working on the renovation of his home. He volunteered 16 years as a skating coach for Kitimat Minor Hockey. He also kept up his interest in film projection, working at the Nechako Theatre once a week. In 1999, Joe retired to Chilliwack to live near his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed his time curling, attending aquafit classes, reading, gardening and spending hours on projects in his garage workshop. Joe was a curious, resilient and resourceful man, always open to learning or tackling something new. He was an accomplished electrician, handyman, and storyteller who will be remembered for his work ethic, and for being generous with his time. Joe attended St. Mary's Church. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Joe will be lovingly remembered by his wife Evie; his children, John, Marcie, Sandra, Nancy and Cathy; sister Olive; his eight grandchildren and all the family and friends who knew him. Those who wish may kindly donate to the Chilliwack Curling Club or the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
