Joan Phyllis Whitfield was born in Vancouver May 21, 1920 she was one of four children to parents James and Phyllis Coates. In 1941 Joan joined the Royal Canadian Airforce becoming a wartime equipment assistant, positioned in Gander, NL. Although her Airforce career was cut short due to poor eyesight, she remained in Gander and married Frank Whitfield in 1947, she later returned to BC.
Over Joan’s lifetime she lived in various cities throughout Canada, as well as in Arizona, USA. While in Kitimat, Joan worked as a secretary for the executive of Alcan Aluminum for some 25 years.
Her stay in Kitimat was instrumental for her nephew David, where he met his future wife Carol while working as a summer student. From Kitimat, Joan made her way to Victoria, and worked as a lay reader at a Christian church and lead services in the Rector’s absence. Joan had a fondness for poem writing, math, drawing, playing the piano and enjoyed singing in the choir.
Joan is predeceased by her brothers Bob and John, and is survived by her sister Rosemary.
