August 4, 1929 - December 9, 2021
It is with great sadness that the Mitchell family, Sylvia, Vernon, Garry and Nancyjane announce the passing on December 9, 2021 of George Wilfred Mitchell.
George, a long-time resident of Kitimat, had lived a long, full and interesting life. He was born in Djakarta, Indonesia on August 4, 1929 and was raised on his family's sugar cane plantation until he was taken, from the ages of 12-16, into a Japanese concentration camp during WWII. Following his release, he continued his studies eventually becoming a Mechanical Technologist.
In 1956 George immigrated to Canada, first to Ontario and then to Vancouver where he worked for the Sandwell Engineering Firm. He met and married a young nurse, Sylvia Brown in 1957 and their oldest son Vernon was born the following year. The family of three moved to Kitimat in 1958 where George was employed by Alcan for 34 years. Over the next few years George and Sylvia welcomed Garry and Nancyjane into their family.
George and Sylvia settled into life in Kitimat becoming involved in community life and raising their busy children. George enjoyed fishing and hunting and was well knows as a handyman and mechanic, repairing many lawnmowers, snowblowers and small engines throughout his years.
George will be missed by his beloved wife Sylvia and his children. Vernon, Garry {plus his children Sarah (husband Kyle and two children Olive and Avery) and Corey} and Nancyjane (Husband Sam Harness and children Daniel and Trevor. He also has a surviving niece, Mandy Mitchell in Amsterdam.
Thank you to all who have reached out and to the staff at Mountain View Lodge for their continued support of Sylvia.
