January 22, 1930 - March 1, 2025
In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our Mom, Ethel Lydia Robinson, on March 1, 2025 at the age of 95.
Born on a farm near Pelly Saskatchewan to Joseph and Ruby Rever, Ethel was the second oldest of five girls. She later moved with her family to a farm near Norquay, Saskatchewan and then attended Teacher's College in Saskatoon. Ethel taught for several years in one-room schoolhouses, covering grades 1 to 12 on her own.
In 1955 Ethel married Donald Robinson in Norquay, Saskatchewan and in November 1956 travelled to Kitimat with their newborn son to join Donald who had gone ahead to start work at Alcan.
Ethel stayed at home to raise their five children and was busy with cooking, bread making, sewing, knitting and anything else required. As her children grew older, she returned to substitute teaching and volunteering at Kildala School and even did a few seasons of tree planting.
Ethel was very involved with Kitimat Minor Hockey, taught Sunday School, sang in her church choir and served on many committees at Kitimat First United Church. She knit baby sweaters for the hospital auxiliary, helped at the food bank, the library book sales and anywhere else a helping hand was needed, including lovingly helping to raise her Kitimat grandchildren. You never heard a complaint from Ethel, or a bad word spoken about anyone.
Mom lived in her own home until the age of 94 and enjoyed gardening and sharing its bounty with family and friends. She also enjoyed baking - with cookies and muffins always available at her house, and a family dinner wasn't complete without Grandma's buns.
Ethel was predeceased by her husband Donald, son David, grandson Darcy, sisters Rose Apperley and Evelyn Vogel, and parents Joseph and Ruby Rever.
Mom will be lovingly missed by her children: Neil (Joan), Linda (Augie) Penner, Patricia (Carl) Gabel, Glen (Madeleine) and daughter-in-law Ernesta plus her grandchildren: Brad (Alana), Jason (Melissa), Ryan (Alison), Dan (Ashley), Marli Penner, David Gabel, Mark (Aly) Gabel, Eric (Melanie) Penner, Rachel Penner, Troy (Jordan), Zack, Jake and her 12 great-grandchildren. Mom also leaves behind two sisters, Violet Off and Ruthie Lister.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday, March 22 at 2 p.m. at Kitimat First United Church. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Feenan and the wonderful nursing staff at Kitimat General Hospital for their care and compassion for both Mom and her family.
