This small wolverine was caught early this morning in Kitimat and is now being relocated.

The bear trap set for wolverines in Kitimat caught one wolverine this morning.

The wolverine caught in the trap weighed about 9 kilograms and from head to tail and appeared to be about 0.9 metres, said police who got a look at the animal as it was being carted out of town with conservation officers.

"It's not a five-foot monster," said RCMP Cpl. Darryl Peppler, explaining that conservation officers were on their way to relocate the animal when he met them for a look at it.

The animal was caught just after midnight Thursday morning in the trap set in the Meldrum Street area of Kitimat.

"The trap is moved because that's how they're going to transport it," said Peppler.

Conservation officers haven't yet been reached for comment.

But Mayor Joanne Monaghan could, and she said she's glad the trap worked, at least once.

"I guess we've got only 3/4 of the problem that we had before," she said.
