Two lost cross country skiers at Onion Lake were found safe by Kitimat Search and Rescue (KSAR) last night.
On Jan. 5 at approximately 5:30 p.m., the pair were reported missing at the Snow Valley Nordic Ski Club’s cross-country ski trails to Kitimat RCMP who contacted KSAR for assistance.
KSAR search manager Mike Stekelenburg says the two people were on the Moose Trail when daylight had run out and heavy snow continued to fall. The skiers were not prepared to spend the night.
They then contacted police themselves to notify them of their approximate location and stayed put until they were found.
Seven KSAR members responded to the call, with the help of one volunteer from the Snow Valley Nordic Ski Club, and soon located the two skiers at approximately 8:30 p.m.
They were found in good condition and returned to their vehicles.
Stekelenburg says the skiers made the right decision to call for help as conditions worsened and glad that they were able to locate them quickly.
He adds that although Onion Lake is a popular recreational site, it is still a part of the outdoors and it’s important to be prepared in case of an emergency — especially during the winter months.
