Aluminum giant Rio Tinto is partnering with the Coast Mountain Children’s Society to provide better access to child care for the Kitimat community.

The company invested $88,000 to support the establishment of a new after-school child care program this month. The funding enabled the Coast Mountain Children’s Society to purchase a 15-passenger van that will be used to pick up children after school.

Rio Tinto operates the aluminum smelter in Kitimat and said its donation will address increasing demand for child care services in Kitimat especially following the announcement of the closure of the Stepping Stones daycare.

“We are very pleased to be able to offer extended service hours starting in November with our new after-school child care program,” said Danis Bachek, executive director, of Coast Mountain Children’s Society.

“This program will give parents with young children an additional option to find the right balance between work and family,” he added.

Spokesperson for the smelter in Kitimat, Claudine Gagnon, said access to child care is an important issue for their employees and the wider community in Kitimat.

“We are working in collaboration with the local and provincial governments, other industry players and community organizations to find solutions that will provide more flexibility to parents and their children.”
