Rio Tinto gave over $2.2 million to various initiatives across B.C. in 2021, marking a 10 per cent increase compared to 2020.
The most significant amount was given to environmental groups totalling just under $1 million. The 38 organizations that received funding are primarily in the Kitimat-Terrace area and the Nechako Watershed.
“In 2021, we increased our support to enhance the physical and mental well-being of our people, as well as the health of the environment,” said Claudine Gagnon, Rio Tinto Aluminium general manager, Communities & Communication.
“We continued to collaborate with First Nations to advance meaningful reconciliation in Northern British Columbia.”
Gagnon also said Rio Tinto has provided assistance to local organizations that help build more sustainable and liveable communities.
A few groups that received assistance include, Kitimat Terrace Clean Air Coalition, Kitamaat Valley Education Society and the Skeena Heartbeat society, among others.
