Kitimat RCMP and employees from the Royal Bank of Canada held a fraud prevention and awareness workshop on Oct. 3 at the Kitimat Seniors Centre.

The workshop covered a number of topics such as lottery scams, phishing, nephew bandit (grandparents scam) and charity scams. They also focused on frauds associated with identity, gift cards, CRA, and bitcoin.

The staff at Royal Bank added to these topics and spoke about specific examples they experience on a weekly basis.

There were 32 people in attendance and a senior from Kitimat shared his story of credit card fraud, said Graham Morgan, Kitimat RCMP detachment commander.

“We average at least a couple frauds per month. Some attempt fraud are referred directly to Canadian Anti Fraud Centre and they track common trends,” Morgan said.

Police remind people that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
