A new commercial development could bring McDonald’s to Kitimat soon.

The District of Kitimat council heard from planners and discussed the project at the Feb. 7 council meeting.

The proposed project will be at 36 Hwy 37, which is one lot closer to Kitimat from Forest Ave. and Hwy 37 corner.

The new lot would feature three new buildings, one being a McDonald’s restaurant and drive-thru, a gas station with four pumps that would include a convenience store and a commercial rental unit for tenant use.

During discussions, Councillor Mario Feldhoff spoke highly of the project and his own excitement to see this lot be developed.

“I’m very excited by what you’re proposing, I think it will be a wonderful addition to our community and I appreciate the thought that you’ve given to your presentation today,” said Feldhoff.

Councillor Mark Zielinski also echoed Feldhoff’s excitement during his own comments. Zielinski also spoke about what council can do to make the area safer for pedestrians by expanding the sidewalk in the area.

Traffic impacts in the area were also raised as a possible concern during discussions. A Traffic Impact Assessment was completed and indicates that during the development of the lot traffic impacts in the area are expected to be minimal. However, the intersection of Kitamaat Village and Highway 37 is anticipated to see longer delays from the southbound approach during peak hours.

Council unanimously passed a motion following a question and answer period that would receive the report for consideration and refer the plan to the Advisory Planning commission.
