Residents of Kitimat woke up on New Year’s Day to find that the lower City Centre Mall entrance roof had collapsed.

Early travellers may have also seen water coming out from the roof, as a sprinkler line blew causing the collapse. Crews responded quickly around 5:30 a.m. when the water flow alarm first went off.

“Crews searched the rubble pile visually and with thermal imaging to ensure that nobody was injured,” said Maggie Hall, director of economic development and communications.

“The District of Kitimat office is undamaged and remains open to the public.”

Assessments are currently underway and the entrance has been blocked off. The debris must first be cleared out before crews can begin rebuilding.

There is currently no scheduled time of reopening for the entrance.
