The Light Up Kitimat event has been cancelled for this year.

It was slated to take place on Dec. 5, but now for the second year in a row, it will not go ahead as planned.

The Chamber of Commerce in a press release said that the safety of the community is always at the forefront of event planning. New COVID-19 related restrictions were introduced on Nov. 30 for all of Northern Health making it more difficult to host the event.

The Chamber does have some alternatives to get residents into the holiday spirit. People can visit the Chamber of Commerce and consider making a donation to the Community Development Centre. Currently, donations of mittens, hats, socks, gently used jackets or monetary donations are being requested. There will also be decorations being given away, one per family for those visiting the Chamber of Commerce. The decorations were originally purchased for the Light Up Kitimat event.

There is also a chance to take a selfie at City Centre Mall to enter a draw. People are encouraged to snap their photo next to the holiday picture frame with the hashtag “chamber Christmas”. Participants are also asked to tag @Kitimatchamber on Instagram. The picture frame will be on the second floor from Dec. 13 to Dec. 22.

The draw will be for three themed baskets that each have a different set of prizes. The first basket which is a family-style basket will have a game night theme and there will also be cooking and coffee-themed baskets to be given away.
