Kitimat fire crews, RCMP investigating possibly suspicious blaze

Fire department says that the fire started Tuesday night (Jan. 17)

Kitimat RCMP are investigating a fire that broke out on Tuesday night (Jan. 17) at a set of vacant snow-covered townhouses on 1064 Nalabila Blvd.

The building was empty at the time of the fire and no injuries have been reported, Sgt. Rob Gardner told the Sentinel News.

Investigators believe the fire may be suspicious in nature.

Rick Reinert, who lives directly behind the property, said that he smelled smoke at around 8 p.m. It makes the second fire he’s seen in the empty complex.

Reinert has said he’s made multiple reports to the district and authorities about the abandoned buildings. Over the summer, he had seen several kids coming in and out of the unsecured structures and has been concerned that something like this would happen for a long time, he said.

The Kitimat RCMP are urging anyone with information or who may have CCTV footage to contact Mounties at 250-632-7111.
