Green shirt day is an annual event in Canada to honour the victims of the April 6, 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash that killed 16 people.
On April 7, 2018, Broncos defenceman Logan Boulet died as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash. Boulet was a registered organ donor. His donation saved six lives and inspired the largest wave of organ donation registration due to a single event in Canada’s history.
Boulet was inspired by his coach Ric Suggitt, who died on June 27th, 2017 and his donation also saved six lives.
In Kitimat, April 7, has been officially proclaimed Green Shirt Day based on the colour of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League team’s jerseys.
The District of Kitimat has agreed to light up the Kitimat Ice Rink, Tamitik Arena and Riverlodge Recreation Centre green to promote the importance of registering as an organ donor.
WESCO in Kitimat has also agreed to donate 100 green lightbulbs for people to switch out their front porch lights to help raise awareness.
