The Kitimat Municipal Cemetery may be getting an upgrade as council is considering a columbarium in the 2023 budget.

A columbarium is a structure with niches for funeral urns to be stored. The project was presented by Carol and Ferruccio Tormene to council on Dec. 5.

“It takes away the burden of families having to look after plots and headstones,” said Carol Tormene.

They pointed to the columbarium in Terrace that contains 48 niches, with two remains in each niche. The structure saves space in the cemetery and has benches for mourners to sit and reflect.

Council admitted it’s a very cost-effective way to honour the deceased.

Council was scheduled to have its first budget deliberations Monday, Dec. 12.
