Cold weather and winter storm to hit parts of northwest B.C. today and Friday

Terrace and Kitimat to feel like minus 20 C, Dease Lake minus 45 C with wind chill

Along with a winter storm warning, temperatures in Terrace and Kitimat areas are expected to feel as low as minus 20 C on Thursday and Friday (Dec. 16- 17).

According to Environment Canada, strong outflow winds combined with cold interior air will generate wind chill values near minus 20.

Wind chill values are expected to be lowest tonight and Friday morning.

“Frostbite and hypothermia can occur within minutes if adequate precautions are not taken when outdoors. Minimize exposed skin with hats, scarves and mittens or gloves,” said the weather agency.

Heavy snow, amounting to 20 to 30 centimetres, is also a possibility Friday through Saturday for Terrace, Kitimat, Bella Coola, Bulkley Valley, Lakes District, and Highway 16 east of Prince Rupert to Burns Lake.

Dease Lake is also set to see extremely cold wind chills with the temperature feeling as cold as minus 45 C today.

The conditions are expected to last until the afternoon, caused by an arctic airmass over northern B.C. has combined with moderate winds.
