Kitimat council adopted bylaw 1995 (461 Quatsino Blvd.) in a bid to bring affordable rentals to Kitimat.

The new rental units will be located on the front part of the lot.

All the units will be rental only and there will be 20 long-term units, 12 second-stage housing units for women and children and up to 18 transition beds.

The bylaw has been in the works for a while and has seen in-depth discussion in previous meetings.

Beginning back in June 2020, council resolved to provide $500,000 in cash contributions from the affordable housing fund. Then in April 2021, council reviewed the housing agreement and gave bylaw 1995 three readings. In November 2021 that would be rescinded and there would be an amendment made which would then be given three readings.

A signed copy of the housing agreement from BC Housing was received by the District of Kitimat’s legal team on Dec. 2 2021, however, on Dec. 6 TSW requested a correction to increase the number of second-stage housing units.

Finally after all the changes and discussions had the bylaw was brought to council on Jan. 17 for its third reading and then at a special meeting on Jan. 24 was unanimously adopted.
