With three-quarters of the year gone, building permit values are close to triple what they were a year ago.

With three-quarters of the year gone, building permit values are close to triple what they were a year ago.

And, not surprisingly, it is industrial permits fuelling the numbers, driven primarily by the Rio Tinto Alcan smelter modernisation project.

As of the end of September industrial construction values were $30.65 million against $11.67 million last year.

Residential has more than doubled to $2.66 million ($1.1 million in 2010).

Commercial hit $898,000  ($254,500) while institutional shot up to $735,000 ($72,000).

This year three new dwelling unit permits worth $389,500 have been issued versus two worth $340,800 in 2010.

With values way up, so is the total value of building permits issued by the city in the first nine months of this year - $139,700 against $54,800.

A total of 108 building/plumbing permits have been issued this year followed by demolition permits at 73.
