The Kitimat U18 House Winterhawks secured back-to-back victories against the Prince Rupert Sea Wolves in a pair of Recreational League games on home ice on the Jan. 25 weekend. Despite playing with a short roster, the Winterhawks brought in reinforcements from Terrace, and Kolby Day delivered an outstanding performance in both matches.
In the first game, Day scored all four of Kitimat’s goals in a 4-3 win. His efforts included a dazzling unassisted tally and three goals set up by teammates. One came from a hard-fought board battle won by Luca Colombo, who centred the puck for Day to hammer home. Another saw Colombo setting Day up on a short-handed breakaway, while Julian Teves created a scoring chance by bouncing the puck off the end boards, allowing Day to race in and score.
The second game saw Kitimat take an early lead through Jericho Tse, who slid a rebound through the goalie’s legs to make it 1-0. After Prince Rupert tied the score, Noah Goffinet-Forward restored the lead with a sharp dangle past a defender and a precise wrist shot just below the goalie’s glove. Luca Colombo extended the advantage with a high shot that rolled over the goalie’s shoulder into the net.
The Sea Wolves pulled within one, but Kitimat responded with another short-handed goal from Day, set up by Dominic Puglas. Teves capped the scoring by diving to sweep a pass to Day, who broke in alone and fired it past the goalie for a 5-2 victory. Goalie Josiah Urbanowski earned both wins, anchoring the Winterhawks with strong performances.
