Zachary Dumas of the Kitimat Marlins swim club attended the Canadian western Nationals swim meet in Calgary.

To attend the meet, the 17-year-old needed to reach the tough western Canadian racing time standard, standards that could only be made in a long course (50 meter) pool.

Dumas was the only swimmer from northwest B.C. to make the standard. There were 430 swimmers in attendance at the meet from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Swimmers raced in two categoriesL: 14-16 year old, and 17 and over.

Dumas had his best result in the 400 individual medley with a silver medal.

The first place swimmer was a 23 year old from the Manitoba university.

Dumas is the first Kitimat Marlins swimmer to medal at a national meet since Megan Allen did it in the late 1990s.

Dumas lowered his own regional record in the event by a whopping 4 seconds.

He also placed 5th in the 1500 meter freestyle and 8th in the 400 meter freestyle.
