Disc golfers from across the Northwest braved four rounds of competition in Kitimat last weekend, as the Fourth Annual District of Kitimat Disc Golf Tournament marked its biggest and most inclusive year yet.
The event drew 22 competitors from Telkwa, Terrace and Kitimat, with players competing for the first time across multiple skill and age divisions — including Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Masters 40-plus, Masters 50-plus, Women’s Beginner and Women’s Intermediate.
There were prizes for first, second and third place in every division. Thanks to generous support from sponsors, all competitors received draw prizes and swag bags, and were treated to a dinner and social event, with food provided by Kyle’s No Frills.
The overall women’s and men’s champions were Amanda Cathers and Travis Hoornenborg, both from Kitimat. Cathers delivered steady scores through all four rounds, while Hoornenborg finished 16 under par over 52 holes. Jerad Shaw followed closely behind at 14 under par. They were the only players in the tournament to finish under par.
Josh McDonald won the closest-to-the-pin contest with a hole-in-one. Dryden Straw earned an honourable mention for landing closest to the pin without an ace.
Tombstone Discs donated cash prizes for the closest woman to the pin and the junior (18 and under) closest-to-the-pin category. Amanda Cathers and Jory Rego took those honours. Malcolm Graham was the winner of the putting contest.
Organisers extended thanks to the event’s sponsors: the District of Kitimat, Kyle’s No Frills, Terus Construction, Mr Mikes SteakhouseCasual Kitimat, Two Peaks Brewing, Tombstone Discs, Rainforest Wellness Pharmacy, Mstar Hotel Kitimat and the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce.
