The Kitimat RCMP has issued a scam alert to local businesses and individuals, cautioning them against fraudulent calls seeking donations for the upcoming Guns-N-Hoses charity hockey event. In a striking irony, scammers are misusing the names of the very institutions - police and fire departments - that serve to protect the community.

Scheduled for February 10, the Guns-N-Hoses event is an annual highlight in Kitimat, where RCMP officers and firefighters face off on the ice in a friendly but spirited hockey match. This event, more than just a community gathering, plays a pivotal role in supporting local youth. All proceeds are directed to KidSport, a charity that provides financial aid to families who cannot otherwise afford registration fees for their children’s sports affiliations.

Scammers are contacting local businesses and residents, posing as representatives associated with the event, and fraudulently attempting soliciting donations.

The RCMP strongly advises that donations should be made in person at the event, or to a uniformed police officer or firefighter to ensure authenticity. For those who wish to contribute but cannot attend the game, the RCMP detachment in Kitimat is a safe alternative to drop off donations.

The police welcome anyone unsure about the legitimacy of a donation request to contact the Kitimat RCMP at their non-emergency number, 250-632-7111.
