Expectant mothers in Kitimat now have access to more comfortable and efficient care during labour with the arrival of a wireless monitoring device at Kitimat General Hospital.
“This state-of-the-art equipment enhances patient care by allowing for continuous, non-invasive monitoring of uterine contractions with increased comfort and mobility for expectant mothers,” the Kitimat General Hospital Foundation announced.
Unlike traditional monitoring tools that often tether patients to a fixed spot, the Wireless TOCO Transducer allows women to move more freely throughout their labour. This freedom can reduce stress and improve overall comfort during delivery. The wireless design also reduces room clutter and increases safety for both patients and staff, who benefit from easier movement and clearer space in clinical settings.
The hospital now also benefits from two newly trained Registered Nurses in maternity care, part of a broader effort to keep essential childbirth services within the community.
“This milestone means more families in our community will be able to deliver their babies right here in Kitimat—a significant step toward keeping essential healthcare services close to home,” the Foundation stated.
The Foundation began fundraising for the new equipment during the 2023 Smile Cookie Campaign in partnership with local Tim Hortons and LNG Canada. A significant donation from Rio Tinto BC Works in autumn 2023 completed the funding.
Despite production delays, the device has now been delivered and is fully operational following staff training.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported this initiative—from those who bought cookies to corporate partners who donated. Thanks to everyone’s support, this project became a reality. Special thanks go to Rio Tinto BC Works, whose gala donation brought us across the finish line. Because of you, more mothers can now experience safe, comfortable deliveries right here at home in Kitimat.”
