Flaring began at the LNG Canada site Sept. 1. The company recently announced a prolonged period of flaring that will reach about 20 metres in height.

Beginning Dec. 4 the flaring at LNG Canada's Kitimat facility has climbed dramatically, with flames expected to reach 20 metres in height. The activity, part of the Incinerator Burner testing and warm wet flare winterization, will occur intermittently over the next 14 and 60 days respectively, the company announced several days prior to the activity.

"Residents should be aware of the temporary increase," LNG Canada noted, explaining the heightened flaring is essential to the facility's two-year commissioning program.

Since the long-awaited commissioning process began, the seemingly sporadic nature of flaring has reflected the facility's progression through various operational milestones. In November, Kitimat residents observed a sharp reduction in visible flaring as operations advanced. LNG Canada emphasized that flare size fluctuations are a routine aspect of its start-up operations, which began on Sept. 1 with the first delivery of natural gas from the Coastal GasLink pipeline.

Flaring activities will continue intermittently throughout the facility’s commissioning. The company reiterated its commitment to keeping the community and the BC Energy Regulator informed of any changes as the process advances.

LNG Canada encourages residents with questions or concerns to call 1-833-632-LNGC (5642) for assistance. More details on flaring activities are available at lngcanada.ca/safestartup.
