Kitimat council has approved their remuneration raise of 2.4 per cent.

Kitimat council has approved a 2.4 per cent pay increase for the mayor and councillors, adjusting their salaries to reflect the rise in the cost of living. The increase, tied to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the period of August 2023 to August 2024, will bring the mayor’s annual salary to $51,260, an increase of $1,200, while councillors' pay will rise by $667, bringing their annual salary to $28,444.

Council adopted the District of Kitimat Council Remuneration Amendment Bylaw No. 2059, 2024, during its regular meeting on Oct. 21. This formalized the decision to apply the CPI-based adjustment, which has been in place for several years under council’s remuneration policy, Policy C-20, designed to keep salaries in line with inflation by adjusting them annually based on CPI changes.

Council members voted unanimously to see the pay increase take effect on Jan. 1, 2025. Public feedback was invited following the initial three readings of the bylaw on Oct. 7, but no substantial objections were raised.

Kitimat’s approach to salary adjustments aligns with practices in other communities.
