The Kitimat River is among many water courses under a High Streamflow Advisory across B.C.’s North Coast.

The River Forecast Centre has maintained its High Streamflow Advisory for much of B.C.’s North Coast, where river levels are expected to rise quickly but without the risk of major flooding. The advisory covers areas including Stewart, Gitlax̱t'aamiks (New Aiyansh), Terrace, Prince Rupert, Kitimat and Haida Gwaii. Residents in these regions are warned of potential minor flooding in low-lying areas.

"With water levels high and flows going fast, we encourage you to avoid being on riverbanks and along waterways for your safety," officials stated.

At Kingcome River, the water level reached 5.13 metres by 11 a.m., and further increases are expected throughout the day. The Kitimat region is also experiencing high streamflows, projected to peak around the 2-to-5-year return period range. Streamflows in the North and Central Coast areas are forecast to remain high with additional rainfall expected from Monday through Tuesday.

In response to the elevated water levels, the District of Kitimat issued a Water Quality Advisory as increased turbidity in the Kitimat River has impacted the local water system. Residents, particularly children, the elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems, are advised to boil water before consumption. Public premises owners must inform patrons of the notice, which remains in place until water flow rates decrease and turbidity levels return to normal.

As a precaution, the District has also closed Hirsch Creek Park due to high water levels, and residents are being urged to exercise caution around riverbanks.
