Kitimat Council have given three readings of a bylaw to increase pay for the Mayor and Councillors, as part of the annual adjustment based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Following Policy C-20, it ensures that salaries keep pace with inflation.

The approved increase reflects a 2.4 per cent rise in CPI from August 2023 to August 2024. As a result, the Mayor’s salary will increase from $50,060 to $51,260, while Councillors’ pay will rise from $27,777 to $28,444. This means a yearly raise of $1,201 for the Mayor and $667 for Councillors.

With three readings now complete, the district will await any public input on the matter before returning the bylaw to Council for final adoption on Oct. 21. If adopted, the new salaries will take effect on Jan. 1, 2025.

Council has used this CPI-based approach since a 2017 review of its effectiveness. In 2020, Council adjusted salaries to align with other communities, but the annual CPI-linked process remains in place.
