Dear Editor,
I have read the article in July 20’s Northern Sentinel and all the comments on Facebook regarding the proposal to change the arena’s name from Tamitik to George Thom Arena.
Then I read the comments from councillors. It appears they are in favour of naming something but want DoK staff to look into developing a policy to recognize other mayors.
That being said, you as a council have already named a street and a room after previous mayors and I don’t remember hearing there should be a policy to do that.
Whose idea was that?
I must have missed the newspaper and discussion at a council meeting when that was the topic.
How come now?
My personal feeling is that not all mayors have accomplished as much as Mayor Thom.
Maybe your policy should have a clause in it to say “only if something positive has been accomplished during their time to improve our community”.
I know of mayors who didn’t do much during their “reign”.
Normally people aren’t honoured for no reason. The excuse that something has been called by a certain name ‘forever’ doesn’t hold.
The community room at Riverlodge was called that ‘forever’ and there was no backlash about that - of course it wasn’t publicized until after it was a done deal.
Last thoughts - what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, and political correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional illogical minority.
Keep smiling,
I’m watching and listening,
Roma Burnett
