Kitimat RCMP is investigating a burglary after thieves forced their way into the Royal Canadian Legion’s clubhouse recently.

Legion president Marg Bogaert said the thieves struck early on Friday morning, April 14, gaining entry through a door in the downstairs bar.

She wasn’t aware of the burglary until she received a panicked phone call from a staff member who arrived to open the clubhouse on Friday afternoon.

“There were things missing from the bar and the office was a complete mess,” said Bogaert. “I suspect they were probably after cash.”

She said the thieves must have been disappointed because there isn’t much cash kept at the clubhouse, especially as many patrons use cards to pay.

The thieves, however, did take an unsuccessful crack at the ATM, which they quickly discovered was not going to provide easy pickings.

Bogaert said the inconvenience and damage caused by the thieves far outweighed any money they may have found.

“I can’t believe they broke in here,” said Bogaert. “It’s disappointing that thieves would target the Legion considering we are a service club.”

She said this is the third time in about 50 years that thieves have broken into the Legion. She said security “has been beefed up” since the burglary.

Kitimat RCMP’s Sergeant Graham Morgan confirmed an investigation has been launched into the burglary.

“We have sent a number of items to the Forensic Investigation Section for analysis,” said Morgan.

He appealed to anyone who might have information about the burglary to contact the Kitimat RCMP at 250-632-7111.
