The District of Kitimat honoured the recipients of the 2024 Distinguished Citizen Awards. This annual recognition, part of the July 1 celebrations, highlighted the contributions of individuals and groups who made significant impacts on the community. Recipients were chosen from nominations submitted by residents and were celebrated during the stage show at Riverlodge Recreation Centre.
Ashley Hinton was recognized for her extensive volunteerism, particularly in organizing special events and assisting with community activities for various agencies in Kitimat.
The Douglas Channel Watch Board was honoured for its decades-long commitment to educating the public about the ecosystems and marine life in the Douglas Channel and surrounding areas. The board was also noted for its advocacy for proactive protection measures and ecological preservation.
Grace Feduniak was acknowledged for her numerous acts of volunteerism in the community, specifically focusing on youth initiatives and the creation of an annual high school scholarship.
Katrina Kindrat was recognized for her social outreach in Kitimat, including setting up and organizing Creative Canvas Canada and Kitimat Experiences. She hosted over forty events such as weekly paint nights, hikes, kayaking, barbecues, volunteer activities, and dog walking.
The Kitimat Economic Development Association was commended for its dedication and organization of the 2023 Minerals North Conference and its support in economic development in Kitimat over many years.
The KUTE Board was recognized for over 30 years of service to Kitimat as the only recycling depot serving all sectors—residential, industrial, commercial, and institutional. The board also conducted ongoing educational campaigns and initiatives to promote sustainable lifestyles.
The Rod & Gun Association Board was honoured for its long-standing efforts to educate the public about the importance of environmental stewardship. The board provided numerous opportunities for the public to immerse themselves in the natural world and participated in events promoting eco-consciousness.
