Tamitik Status of Women (TSW) is rallying the Kitimat community to help spread holiday joy through its vital program. From supporting struggling families to providing festive gifts for children, TSW offers multiple ways for people to make a meaningful impact this season.
TSW’s call for assistance comes as the much-anticipated opening of its new housing and childcare facility has been delayed. After a celebratory event in the spring, officials discovered the building’s plumbing system produced water that did not meet Health Canada standards, putting its use on hold. Despite this setback, the organization remains focused on its mission. “Your generosity can make a profound impact on individuals and families who need it most, helping to ensure that their basic needs are met and that they can experience the joy and warmth of the holiday season,” TSW said in a statement.
Through the Angel Tree program, donors can help fulfill holiday wishes for children aged 0-18 from low-income families. When possible, the program also provides gifts for parents to share in the holiday cheer. Dunmore Place, TSW’s transition house for women and children escaping abuse, ensures every family staying there receives gifts to open on Christmas morning, along with a festive turkey dinner.
TSW’s Support Services for the Underprivileged (SSUP) includes essential services such as a Food Share program, which offers hot meals and a place to warm up during extreme weather, and baby supplies including diapers, formula, and wipes. The Hygiene program provides necessities like soap, shampoo, and feminine care products, while Heather’s Free Store and Furniture Exchange redistributes clothing and household goods to families in need.
Donations of gifts or monetary contributions are requested by Nov. 22 to ensure timely delivery for holiday initiatives. For those wishing to support, TSW can be reached at 250-632-8787 or by emailing Brittany.K@tamitik.ca.
