There’s a new slimey business in town.

In time for the holiday gift-giving season, nine-year-old Arianna Tanguay has taken over her family’s dining room table with countless containers of glitter and bottles of glue as she makes homemade slime to sell from her new hobby-of-an-enterprise, ‘Arianna’s Slime Shop.’

“Many parents are buying it for their kids to play with for Christmas,” says Kevin Tanguay, Arianna’s father. “We just decided to see how it would go and our timing was kind of perfect.”

With almost 60 containers of slime sold, Kevin says that he’s been surprised with how well her business has taken off since she began two months ago.

Realizing how obsessed Arianna was with making slime after watching countless DIY Youtube videos, he suggested that she should try selling them as they were made almost identically to the store brands. Using his Facebook to advertise her slime shop, they’ve received a surge of orders from throughout the region, including Kitimat, Smithers and even Calgary.

Selling them for $2.00 each, customers can customize their purchase by choosing from a variety of colours and glitter. Kevin says that this shop has been teaching Arianna a lot about finances and how to handle money.

“There are lots of kids out there that are excited about slime and we want to try to keep it going because it’s a good thing for her. She would usually just spent it if we just gave her money, but now she’s putting it in to buy more product and not spending it on anything else.”

From swirling, stretching it, making “crackle-rackle” noises to simply squeezing it, Arianna says that slime for her is a great “stress reliever” and “very satisfying to play with.” She brings it everywhere she goes and often gets in trouble by her teacher for having it out in class.

But now that she has an excuse to make and play with slime, she says that it’s been fun making a business out of it. According to her, lots of her classmates are jealous that she’s making money.

Comically taking the role as the “CEO” of the slime business, Kevin says he has considered purchasing a business licence for her shop and try to sell it at the local farmer’s market next year.

They’ve also decided that they wanted to give back to their community and will be donating 20 per cent of the profit to the local Salvation Army.

And although he doesn’t have the same adoration for slime like his daughter, Kevin says he wants to keep encouraging her to turn her hobbies into great ideas.

“It’s messy, it’s gooey and kind of gross — but it’s something that she loves.”
