To help out local businesses — and thank employees and their families — Rio Tinto is giving gift cards for local businesses to approximately 1,800 BC Works employees and retirees this holiday season.

Rio Tinto has partnered with the Kitimat and Terrace Chambers of Commerce, as well as Support Local BC to provide the gift cards for businesses in the Kitimat and Terrace area. The initiative will return nearly $100,000 into the local economy, Rio Tinto said in a media release.

“I want to thank all our employees for the unparalleled resilience they have shown in 2020 to ensure the success of our business and protect the health and safety of all our people,” Rio Tinto BC Works general manager Affonso Bizon said in the release. “With the Holiday season approaching, we have an opportunity to show our solidarity towards the many local businesses that make Kitimat and Terrace vibrant places to live, while treating our loved ones.”

All non-franchised businesses that are locally owned can apply to join Support Local BC on their website.
