Budding engineers from around the northwest gathered in Kitimat recently for the sixth annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Building competition.
The competition, sponsored by engineering consultants Hatch’s Kitimat branch and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C.’s northern branch, took place at Mount Elizabeth Middle Secondary School.
The contestants had to build a bridge, using only 100 popsicle sticks and a bottle of glue. Once completed, the bridges were tested in a pneumatic bridge-breaking machine.
The competition was open to children from grades 4 to 12, from northern B.C. communities, including Kitimat, Kitamaat Village, Terrace and Prince Rupert.
Prizes were awarded to the winners of three categories, most innovative bridge, strongest bridge in four categories and overall strongest bridge.
