Kitimat’s 33rd Annual Fishing Derby will be taking place on the Labour Day weekend, September 5 and 6, 2020.

It’s “all about the coho!” at the derby, with a grand prize of $1,000 for the largest coho salmon caught. There is also a rod and reel prize for each of the men’s, women’s, and junior’s largest coho. ‘Junior’ or ‘youth’ is considered to be 15-years-old and younger.

All entries have to be caught during the time of the derby, and must have been caught in the Kitimat River or the Douglas Channel, though either from shore or from a boat is acceptable. All federal and provincial fishing regulations apply. Tickets must be shown at the time of weigh-in with a dressed (gutted and gilled) fish, and there is only one weigh-in allowed per ticket.

Entry fee is $20 for those ages 16 and older, and $10 for those 15-years-old and younger. Tickets are still available and must be purchased prior to the derby. They can be purchased at Bradley’s Bait & Tackle, the Chamber of Commerce, and Ron’s Mobile Fishing Tackle Van and Bait Shop. Call or visit the Chamber of Commerce or check out next week’s edition of the Kitimat Northern Sentinel for more information.
