The 2556 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCACC) of Kitimat has been named the 2024 recipient of the Roy Rigby Jones Award, a prestigious honour recognizing outstanding contributions among Army Cadet Corps in British Columbia. The award, created in memory of Major Roy John Rigby-Jones, celebrates exceptional leadership and community involvement.
The Army Cadet League of Canada (ACLC), British Columbia Branch, commended the Kitimat-based corps for its exemplary dedication. “The 2556 RCACC has made a tremendous impact locally, from increasing cadet recruitment to actively supporting the community,” the ACLC stated. Their efforts include participation in the Remembrance Day ceremony and the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy Campaign, as well as offering diverse activities such as drum line training, biathlon, marksmanship, and expeditions.
Major Roy John Rigby-Jones, after whom the award is named, played a pivotal role in shaping the Army Cadet Program. A Vancouver native, he served with distinction in the Second World War and later dedicated decades to the Cadet League, creating policies that continue to guide today’s operations. His legacy lives on through this award, presented annually to a corps demonstrating exceptional merit.
The 2556 RCACC has a membership of 54 cadets, reflecting a steady growth in recruitment. the ACLC said their multifaceted program aims to inspire and engage youth while fostering community spirit. The President of the ACLC BC Branch, Christine Alexander, is set to present the award to the corps in the coming year.
