Legion calls for nominations for medal recipients

Legion is calling for nominations from the public for veterans to receive medals

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 250 in Kitimat is calling for nominations from the public for veterans who haven’t been recognized to receive medals as part of the branch’s Canada 150 celebrations.

Legion president Marg Bogaert said the branch isn’t sure how many veterans there are in town, adding that not all veterans are Legion members.

“We want to honour veterans who have moved into town,” said Marg. “Many veterans came to Kitimat as contractors during the Kitimat Modernization Project and decided to stay after the project was completed.”

She said so far Branch 250 has purchased 25 medals, but will purchase more should they receive and approve more nominations.

“We want people to come forward and nominate veterans from the armed forces, peace keeping forces or the RCMP, who retired or left due to injury or disability, no matter how young or old they are,” said Marg.

“We aren’t necessarily looking just at veterans who have served active duty in wars.”

She said the veterans nominated wouldn’t be expected to attend the award ceremony which will be held during Legion Week from June 24 to 30.

“Our general executive committee will meet to go through the nominations and the recipients will be contacted and invited to the presentation,” said Marg.

She said calling for nominations and awarding the medals is part of the committee’s work to reach out to veterans and to rejuvenate the Branch, and to educate the community that there are veterans among them.

“We always welcome new members at the Legion,” added Marg.
