Violet Howard 1929 - 2009
Violet Alexandrina Mary (Bain) Howard passed away peacefully on Friday, May 15, 2009 after a short illness while on a vacation in Ontario. Violet was a 55 year resident of Kitimat and was predeceased by her loving husband Bob to whom she was married for 54 years. Violet is survived by her five children: Clyde, Brenda Jay (Les), Nadine, Melanie (Keith) and Sherri (Noel). She is also survived by her 8 grandchildren Richelle (Jesse), Jayson, Chelsea, Chynna, Paul, Donavin, Mia, Luc and her great-granddaughter Kylee. Violet will also be sadly missed by her siblings Jessie, Winnie (Dennis) and Rod (Nancy) and their families.
Violet was born in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua and lived in Curacao throughout her childhood. She came to Kelowna BC with her mother and siblings at the age of 14, eventually trained as a teacher and taught in a one room school house on Vancouver Island where she met Bob. Bob joined Alcan and they moved as a young couple to the “new community” of Kitimat.
Violet taught nursery school for many years in Kitimat and often sent high school graduation cards to her former pre-school graduates. She was active in her church and the United Church Women (UCW) for many years, enjoyed activities at the Seniors’ Centre and loved gardening. For over 20 years, Violet and Bob enjoyed their annual vacations with friends travelling to Acapulco, Mexico. Most recently Violet enjoyed travelling with friends and visiting her siblings, children and grandchildren.
A special heartfelt thanks is extended to her neighbours and friends for their support and care which enabled Violet to continue to live in her beloved Nechako neighbourhood throughout her life in Kitimat.
A Celebration of Life will be held at First United Church on a date to be announced (most likely during the 2nd week of July). If desired in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Church or to The Canadian Cancer Society, British Columbia & Yukon Division.
