Hannah Hewson

May 16, 1918 to October 12, 2013


Hannah passed away on October 12, 2013 at Clarke’s Beach Newfoundland and Labrador at the age of 95.

She was born in Gunzenhausen, Germany on May 16, 1918 to Dr. Josef and Lily Wolff. She married the late Warrant Officer Charles John Hewson and served with distinction in the British Army during World War II, being decorated four times. Her family immigrated to Canada in 1957 and lived in Kitimat, BC. Hannah was a children’s nurse before the war and taught special-needs children in Kitimat. She retired to Victoria, BC and subsequently resided in Aylmer, Quebec and Carbonear and Bay Roberts, Newfoundland and Labrador. Hannah was an avid reader and bridge player and a keen follower of current events. She enjoyed volunteer activities and received a citation for her work at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria in 1994. She liked meeting interesting people and travelled extensively as late as her 90th year.

Hannah was predeceased by her sister Ruth and brother Eli. She is survived by sons Michael (Donna Doyle) residing in Bay Roberts and John (the late Peggy Spencer) residing in Burnaby BC. She will be missed by the Stewarts (her Ontario family) and by the Groves family in the UK. Also left to celebrate her life are her Newfoundland families, the Doyles and the LeShanes, and family and friends worldwide.

In accordance with Hannah’s wishes, cremation has taken place and her ashes will be scattered at sea.
