Kitimat residents can now apply for grants to study Community Economic Development

Kitimat residents interested in studying towards a community economic development certificate program have been invited to apply for a sponsored tuition.

Simon Fraser University’s Faculty of Environment, in partnership with Tides Canada, announced a new funding opportunity for seven residents in the region to help pay tuition and travel costs for the certificate program.

SFU interim program director for Community Economic Development Programs, Wes Regan, said the Sponsored Tuition Program offers $3,000 for up to seven people in the region .

“To diversify the employment base of rural and indigenous communities, people need skills, resources and connections, all of which are offered by the program,” said Regan. “Our program recognizes that cost can be a major barrier for innovators and entrepreneurs in these northern communities.”

The program is a part-time eight month course, designed to help people build successful economic development projects and ventures.

Regan said in order to be eligible for sponsored tuition, applicants must: - live in the district

- be highly motivated to develop professional skills for leading community economic development projects

- require financial assistance to participate in SFU’s Certificate Program for Community Economic Development

- work for a non-profit, a municipal government, band office, social enterprise or be starting a social venture;

- have been admitted to SFU’s Certificate Program for Community Economic Development. Before applying for the Sponsored Tuition Program, applicants must pay the $100 application fee and have been assessed as admissible to the program.

To apply submit a short letter (maximum 1000 words) addressed to the Sponsored Tuition Review Committee via email at ced_info@sfu.ca. Please use the email subject line “Sponsored Tuition Application”.

The letter should include:

- past, present, or future goals in community economic development;

- a statement explaining your financial need;

- the name, telephone number, and email of one reference.

The deadline for applications is July 30. Before you apply to the Sponsored Tuition Program You must first apply for and be admitted to SFU’s Certificate Program for Community Economic Development.
