Kitimat District mayor Phil Germuth last week signed a proclamation to mark Volunteer Week in town.

While signing the proclamation, Germuth said the district was very appreciative of the role that volunteers play in Kitimat.

“Council appreciates the hard work that volunteers do for our community throughout the year,” said Germuth. “The volunteerism helps keep this community going and we are very fortunate to have the number of volunteers we have, considering the size of the population.”

Kitimat Child Development Centre (CDC) Better At Home program co-ordinator Terry Runions, who was present for the signing, said the CDC relies on a host of volunteers to keep their programs running.

“We’re always looking for more volunteers and we try hard to match our volunteers with something they are passionate about,” said Runions. “We welcome all volunteers, regardless of how little or how much time they can spare.”

Runions was accompanied by volunteer Helen Nix, who spends two hours a week with an elderly couple, keeping the husband company while his wife dashes out to run errands. Nix, a registered nurse, said volunteering helps her keep a hand in nursing while giving her something to do.

“It keeps me busy and helps integrate me into the community,” said Nix, whose husband was brought in to work on a project in Kitimat.

“I would recommend people volunteer their time, especially if they are new to town,” said Nix.

Runions said anyone interested in volunteering can contact her at 250-632-3144, extension 216.
